XML processing within SQL server has been widely used since SQL Server 2000. It has been further improved with XML data types and functionalities to provide a comprehensive ability to build and shred XML documents. JSON integration was introduced in SQL Server 2016 and has improved in the latest 2022 version of SQL Server. In addition to document processing, there many internal SQL Server uses for XML, such as Execution Plans, SSIS, SSRS and SSAS.
JSON is a technology that is rapidly adapting to changes in SQL Server, but is not limited to use with SQL Server. Cloud platform settings and data interaction are based on JSON as well. Due to their expanding use in the IT world, XML and JSON knowledge are essential skills to pack in your IT toolbelt.
