If you are working with a few data sources, a data warehouse might not be necessary. But as your reports become more complex, by adding more data sources or larger sets of data, a data warehouse can make your development easier and your reports will refresh faster.
Creating a data warehouse need not be complex. There are tools available for citizen developers to create them without setting up new servers, hiring database administrators, etc.
