SQL Server Indexing for Performance

Kimberly Tripp

SQL Server has numerous index options. It can be hard to know the correct design direction to take for indexing your tables? A lot depending on data churn, data usage, and most importantly – the criticality of your queries and data. Join Kimberly in this session to get an overview of when and why you should use combinations of different indexes with emphasis on tuning for the types of data access and usage patterns that are the most important.

Mostly, I’ll focus rowstore indexes. However, I’ll begin with query plan analysis techniques that will help you better understand what SQL Server is doing, whether or not SQL Server will even USE your indexes, and then I’ll dive into demo on how to use the tools to help you decide what indexes are best. We’ll talk about the “green hint” that shows up in showplan (the good and the bad) as well as using DTA (Database Tuning Advisor). If you want a jump start on creating the RIGHT indexes for better performance, this is the place to be!
