Becoming an Azure SQL DBA – High Availability and BCDR

Dr. Dani Ljepava

In this session you will learn how to evolve your Azure SQL DBA skills in the domain of High Availability (HA), Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) from the perspective of on-premises DBA’s.

With the examples of fully-managed PaaS services Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance, you will gain a deep understanding of HA and BCDR architectures in Azure, and any new responsibilities you might have as an Azure SQL DBA.

You will understand how HA for General Purpose and Business Critical service tiers work, and how automated patching and maintenance windows work in Azure SQL. You will also gain a deep understanding of how automated short and long-term backups work in Azure SQL.

Furthermore, you’ll understand advanced concepts of geo disaster recovery with Failover Groups, and disaster recovery between SQL Server 2022 and Azure SQL Managed Instance.

In each of the areas and throughout the session, we will map on-premises SQL Server DBA responsibilities and how they map to Azure SQL DBA – what responsibilities are new, same as ever, shared, or fully delegated to Microsoft.

You will walk away with a deep understanding of how your on-prem DBA skills evolve to Azure SQL DBA in these areas.
