Query Shaping – Advanced Query Tuning
Edward Haynes
An innovative set of techniques and paradigms for optimizing SQL Server query behavior. The techniques are the result of over 20 years data engineer experience.
The presentation engages with query tuning concepts while introducing a method-based approach. The methodology can help de-mystify query tuning and save development time.
The 2-hour content covers:
1.(15 minutes) Understanding the basics of Query Shaping using abstract visualization techniques to identify query behavior potential based on query design. The audience will be introduced to the query as a virtual construct maintained by SQL Server. As you reshape (redesign) the query it is possible to direct the SQL Server engine towards more performant behavior.
2.(30 minutes) Introduction to the free performance diagnostic tool sp_PerfSQL, an on-demand detailed diagnostics tool for first response troubleshooting of in-flight queries. The on-demand capability also facilitates testing query modifications to confirm and quantify the suitability of performance gains. A link will be provided to download the Azure SQL compatible tool.
3.(75 minutes) Bridging the gap between abstract query potential and performance diagnostics using method-based coding techniques that manipulate SQL Server behavior to shape a more performant outcome. Query Shaping emphasizes the significance of IO on query performance and includes techniques to reduce IO. The session will be example driven using sp_PerfSQL to demonstrate performance outcomes.
