Row Level Security: What a DBA Can do to Protect Data and Their Job!
Christopher Frye
In this session, I will show you how you can protect your data from unauthorized individuals. I have had developers tell me not to worry about unauthorized access to the database – their application handles everything.
Bypass the application, and bypass the security. Today it is easy to bypass the application and get access directly to the database. SSMS is a free download, but you don’t even need to download SSMS. All you have to do is go to the Data tab in Excel. In this session, I will demonstrate how to restrict the data the user can retrieve.
This demonstration will show you how to put these restrictions in using Active Directory groups. By using Active Directory groups, it takes the burden off the DBAs for maintaining individual user access and allows the Service Desk/Security Desk to grant data access permissions to the user at the required levels.
